Lamb and Calf Day - Making Money

Last week on Lamb and Calf Day we had stalls to try and make money. We had cool stalls selling toys, food, bouncy balls, books and DVDs. We also had games and competitions for people to enter. Turanga Team made almost $450 on Lamb and Calf Day. We are so proud of ourselves. We plan to use some of the money to buy presents for the K Mart wishing tree. We are also going to have an end of year treat for our team. Also on Lamb and Calf Day some of us showed Lambs and Calves. People could win trophies and ribbons and everyone who entered got a rosette. All the classes had made crafts, and some were very impressive!

News Report

People in Christchurch got hit by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake at 4.35 am Saturday 4 September. Now there are big cracks in the ground. Houses got damaged really badly. It struck 30 km west of the city. People can't use water because the water system is closed. A teenage boy went to sleep and when he woke up he was outside. Some bricks fell on him from the chimney. Houses were left on leans. Train tracks are bent. Roads are closed because they have big cracks in them.

Room 14' s Drummer

On Friday, Ciaran performed the drums in the Ashhurst School assembly. Everyone thought the performance was fantastic! Here is what Georgia thought of it.

On Friday Ciaran played the drums. It was sad because Miss Gregory was away. She was sick. When we got there Ciaran was so nervous. But Ciaran had a talent. Playing the drums. He was rocking out. I did not know that he could be so good. BOG BOOM SHACH. Then the crowd went silent and suddenly... CLAP CLAP CLAP!!!
Room 14 was so proud of Ciaran especially me.

Moko The Bottle Nose Dolphin

I turned on the TV. One news was on. I was so sad when I heard Moko the bottle nose dolphin had died. Heaps of children were crying. He was buried in Taupo beach. But I know now that Moko the dolphin was in the children's hearts. But the children had little Mokos. After that a tear fell down my eye. Drip drop drip drop.

Avalanches!

In Room 14 we have been learning to write explanations. Have a read of Hamish's informative explanation of avalanches.

An avalanche is a deadly big river of snow that tumbles down off the mountainside. Avalanches are caused by earthquakes or snowboards and skis. They can cause bad damage to a village nearby.

Volcanoes!!

In Room 14 we are learning about natural disasters.

On Friday we had a visit from Mr Cronin, a volcanologist, and we learnt heaps of new things about volcanoes.
We found out that when there is a lot of gas in a explosive eruption, it is a very dangerous eruption. The rocks from this sort of eruption are light and have lots of holes in them - like pumice! When there isn't so much gas in an eruption the eruption isn't so dangerous. The rocks in this type of eruption are black and very heavy.
This photo shows these two types of rocks.

Mr Cronin brought in lots different types of volcanic rock, and he also brought in a seismograph which is the instrument used for measuring volcanic eruptions. Thanks for coming in to visit us Mr Cronin!

Autumn Poems

Room 14 have been writing poems about Autumn. Here are some for you to read!

Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves like fire,
Dancing through the trees.
Swirling, twirling to the ground.
To the carpet of leaves.

Callum

Autumn Falls

My leafman has crunchy leaves.
They are orange, red, brown and purple.
And the leaves on the ground,
Look like feathers on a hen.

Dan

Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves crunch like a chip on the ground,
When you stand on them.
The leaves fall down by diving down,
When they are really old like brown.

Savannah

Autumn Leaves

Leaves falling from a tree.
Twirling and swirling,
Down to the ground.
Red, brown, yellow and gold.
Looks like fire,
Around the tree.
